Congratulations to Coach Wasson, his staff and his players on an amazing season. They capped their season off undefeated and with a 36-29 win over Fort Bend Hightower and our 8th State Championship. These young men played as a TEAM, which led to the ultimate team success, a State Championship.

If you are like I am, you're probably still reeling from this past weekends football game. Strange things happen when you refuse to quit, which is what happened. It also has happened all fall for several of our student groups. As I reflect on how quickly the fall has passed by, I realize it is in large part the result of our kids studying, practicing, playing and succeeding in the classroom to volleyball, cross country, tennis, swimming, choir and band contest, theater and in football.

Over the last couple of weeks we have watched our Boys and Girls win the State Cross Country title. They also won the Nike Regionals at the Woodlands and went on to Nationals where the Boys placed second in the nation and the girls finished 8th in the country.

Beauty and the Beast entertained our students and community with pyrotechnics, dancing, singing, to superb acting. As the audience walked out I heard comments like ..... was that really a high school performance, surely not ? Great Job !

Are you Ready for Some Football? How about our UNDEFEATED 15-0 Dragon Football TEAM. Last weeks game seemed to capture the essence of this team. They choose not to accept defeat, they will themselves to victory, they find a way to win in the face of adversity and defeat. We are proud of them and their coaches for their sportsmanship, effort and never say die approach. The FOX sprinting onto the field as the Dragons scored the winning touchdown, seemed to underscore what we all wanted to do ........ sprint onto the field in jubilation, which we know is a violation of UIL rules, unless YOUR A FOX! Congratulations and we look forward to seeing each of you at the State Championship game this coming Saturday at Dragon, I mean Cowboy Stadium at 4:00 pm. FEAR THE FOX !

A Time Of Thanksgiving

It is hard to believe how quickly our year is passing us by. Today is the last day before our Thanksgiving Break and we want to encourage all to enjoy their time away from school. We all are so blessed and have so much to be thankful for. Sometimes in the busyness of everyday life we tend to take for granted the blessings we have. Please enjoy your time together this next week.

On behalf of our school and staff I would like to tell you how much we enjoy teaching and working with your kids. Yes, some days are more fun than others, but they are so positive, respectful, hard working and enjoyable to be around. Their success is the result of hard work, commitment and a great support system.

Special Congratulations:

Cross Country STATE CHAMPIONS ...... sounds amazing. Last weekend over a 30 minute span of time our Girls sprinted off the starting line to win the Girls 5A State Championship by 14 points. The Boys team followed up and won the Boys 5A State Championship by 90 points! Congratulations to Coach Leonard and Coach Gilley for molding and leading these young adults.

Our Volleyball Team had an amazing season and finished with a record of 44-2 before losing in the Area Playoff Game.

Our Varsity Football team continues the Tradition of Excellence and Success. They are currently 11-0 and have their second round playoff game against Cedar Hill tomorrow at Cowboy Stadium.

Another note of recognition goes out to Darien McLemore who was named this past week as the FCA Tom Landry Athlete of the Year.

KDGN: Appropriate Dance Video

Homecoming Dance is this weekend. The HS and Senior High campuses are emphasizing our expectations of wanting our students to have a great time at the Homecoming Dance and do so in an appropriate fashion. We have reminded students that our dance is a school activity and they are expected to abide by the code of conduct. One of the issues in the past has been appropriate dancing. Our KDGN staff produced and aired a video on dancing that I thought you might enjoy. Good job Nick and Molly.

Homecoming Dance

Parents and students as you know our Homecoming Dance will be next Saturday, October 29th at the Gaylord. This is a special event and is a school sponsored event and as such students are expected to abide by the student code of conduct. We all are looking forward to this special night and want all to have a great time. Each year we have anywhere from 1800-2200 students that attend the HC Dance. With that in mind we need your help. Please reiterate to your student we want them to have an awesome time and to dress and dance appropriately.

As you can imagine dances have changed just a bit since you and I attended them many years ago just as the music and style of dance has changed. We are and will remind kids to have a great time but please don't dance in a way that is inappropriate such as doing the grind (ask your kids). The last thing we want to do is to embarrass them by having to ask them to stop or ultimately to leave for being inappropriate.

Parents we would love to have you come out and chaperone the dance which starts at 7:30 and concludes at midnight. If you interested in chaperoning please contact PJ Giamanco the HS Principal or Mike Rhodes the Senior High Principal so we can add you to our list.

Special Congratulations:

Our Lady Dragon Volleyball team have cruised into a District Championship after locking down the title this past week with a win over Fossill Ridge. Our girls are still ranked #1 in Texas and have a season record of 51-1. They have three more games left in district before they begin the playoffs. They play at Central tonight at 7:30 and will conclude district with home games next week.

The Dragon Football team are 8-0 and are ranked 6th in State. We are currently first in district after last nights victory over Keller Central by a score of 24-21. We have two more district games left with Saginaw on Friday, 10-28-11 which will be our Senior Night followed by our last district game at Guyer on 11-4-11.

Senior Night is Friday, October 28, 2011 at Dragon Stadium: We would like to remind everyone to come out for senior night as we recognize our seniors involved in band, cheerleading, drill team, crew, football and trainers along with our National Merit Semi-Finalist, Commended and National Achievement Scholars. The recognition program will begin promptly at 7:00 PM.

Good Luck to our Dragon Band as they compete tomorrow at the District Marching Contest. They will take the field at 5:45 PM at Standridge Stadium in Carrolton.

Start of Second Six Weeks

School News:
In the last couple of weeks we had the opportunity to see our kids conclude the first six weeks of school, adjust to junior year expectations, administered the PSAT and supported the high school campus and senior high students when a student on the high school campus passed away. We would like to sincerely thank our counseling staff for being visible, supportive and proactive in serving and meeting the needs of all students.

Make a Difference:
During the past couple of weeks we are reminded that we each have been entrusted with the ultimate responsibility of serving and taking care of your most valuable possession, your children. We take this responsibility serious and take to heart that students will remember how we taught them more than what we taught them. They truly are our legacy and represent our future leaders and citizens. This past weekend I attended a funeral of a close friend and fellow teacher of over 30 years. Former friends, teachers and students attended the services and it became a celebration of how one person can make a difference in the lives of others. It truly is our hope that each student's life will be changed in a positive way through our encounters. I know some of you may think of the exceptions where a student's schedule was changed which caused anxiety, but as a campus we always try to look at the big picture while trying not to lose sight of the individuals who make up the big picture. Thank you for your patience and support as we make some difficult decisions. If we can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to call on upon us.

Dragon Kudos:
Our #1 State Ranked Lady Dragon Volleyball team are rolling through district and currently sit with a district record of 39-1. They girls have a big match this Friday here at home against Coppell. Come out and support this awesome group of young ladies, led by Coach Arthur Stanfield.

Coach Smith and our Team Tennis kids went 7-0 through the district round robin and are currently seeded 1st in District and 18th in the State of Texas. They will begin the district tournament this coming Tuesday at 4:00 here at CSHS. We wish them the best of luck as the pursue another district championship.

Our Carroll Debaters are carrying on the success of our debate program as they are qualifying for State and National bids. They have received special recognition as one of the most outstanding forensic programs in the country. Great Job, Mrs. Forbes.

Congratulations to Coach Wasson and our 11th in State ranked Dragon Football team. They enter tomorrows game with a record of 6-0 and will play Coppell who are ranked 14th in state. See you at Dragon Stadium tomorrow night as we kick off at 7:30. It will be our Green Out Game so ..... Wear Green and Be Loud and Proud of your Dragons!

Our Cross Country kids are putting in the miles in pursuit of another district title. If you have not heard the Boys and Girls are both ranked 1st in State and Nationally the Boys are ranked 2nd and the Girls are 9th. Their district Cross Country Meet will be on October 27th at Meadowmere Park. Special kudos go out to one of their awesome coaches. Coach Gilley was recently named as the FIOS Verizon Community Leader of the Week recipient. She is one of 10 coaches recognized across the state of Texas. National Merit: The College Board has released their annual National Merit Commended, Finalist along with their National Hispanic and African American Scholar students. We will be recognizing our students at our last home football game on October 28th. We have 8 National Merit Semifinalist. Kudos to Brian Bourcy, Michael Huang, Colin Kantor, Patrick Liu, Conner Mitchell, Lauren Rutherford, Christian Shannon and Hannah Walcek. We have an additional 44 commended and scholar students we will be recognizing also. Each week we typically receive another selection notice from the college board.

Our Pride of the Dragon Band will be competing in their UIL Marching Contest on October the 22nd at 5:45 PM at Standridge Stadium in Carrolton. They will be performing their inspiring and patriotic show entitled to those Who Serve and Protect. Please take the time to express your appreciation to our students and directors who have designed a special show to honor those who have and are serving our country. Great Job as always to our directors for being such inspiring and positive role models.

Carroll Senior High News

School is off to a great start as our students have returned in mass. As of today we have 685 seniors and 597 juniors on campus, giving us a total enrollment of 1282. Over the years we have heard a lot about this class as they have come up through the various campuses. Some of the comments include how they will be our largest senior class and how talented they are academically and in extracurricular activities. We are excited about watching them become our senior leaders and as they Protect the Tradition. Due to the larger numbers and new students to the campus we have faced some challenges over the last couple of weeks in adjusting schedules and teacher assignments in an effort to balance out class sizes. I personally would like to thank each of you for being so patient and understanding.

Our students have jumped into the swing of a new school year by pouring their efforts into academics and extra-curricular activities. As you may know our volleyball team is currently ranked #1 in class 5A and they are sporting a record of 30-1. Our tennis team is leading the district in Team Tennis with a district record of 3-0. Lastly, our 9th ranked state football team is undefeated at 2-0 and will take on Berkner High School this Friday in Richardson. Thank you for showing your support of our students.

START OF SCHOOL:

It is hard to believe that the beginning of school is just around the corner. Monday, August 22nd, students and staff will enter the halls of Carroll Senior High with Great Expectations for another amazing year. When driving a car, it is important to look in the rear view mirror to see where you have been. GREAT driver's understand that it is more important to look ahead in order to arrive at your destination. This past year we experienced challenges and inconveniences with construction. Yet, our students and staff took it all in stride as we stood by and watched with pride as our students experienced unprecedented success in every realm from academics to extra-curricular activities. The question remains, what lies ahead in 2012?

Amazing Year

What an Amazing year .... we are currently leading the Lone Star Cup in a neck and neck race with the Woodlands High School in Conroe. Our students have excelled in every arena they have entered. Like the saying goes ... They Have Bloomed Where Planted! This past week we were talking about how most schools would be proud to have teams sneak into the playoffs, have a district championship or to have students qualify for State level competition. We truly are blessed, spoiled and probably underestimate and under appreciate how hard our kids and staff work. In actuality it is not that we under appreciate them but have grown to expect success. They truly are the torch bearers of "Protecting the Tradition".

Dragon Success:
Congratulations to the following students and groups for their hard work and dedication which has yielded great success.

Boys Baseball Team were defeated in the third round of the playoff by Plano. They ended their season with a record of 29-8 which included playoff wins over Mansfield Legacy and Plano East.
Boy's State Golf Runner-Up: Congratulations to our boys team led by Matt Gilchrest, Vince Martino, Blake Pugh, Corbin Kasten and Matt Isler that placed 2nd in State.
Girls State Runner-Up Tennis: Freshman Carroll Dragon singles tennis player Kelley Anderson placed second at the state tennis tournament. Austin McCasin also qualified on the boy's side in singles.
Boys Track Team placed 3rd in State last weekend after the 4x400 Relay Team ran a 3:13 to become State Champions in dramatic fashion. Congratulations to Sabian Holmes, Peyton Williams, Scott Peterson, Mac McGuire. Trevor Gilley placed 4th in state in the mile.

2011 5A State Soccer Champions: They were also named by NSCAA as National Champions and ESPNRise #2 National team. Our Boy's Soccer Team finished their season undefeated and with a record of 28-0-3.

Stretch Run

The adage that "Time Flies When Your Having Fun" appropriately describes our school year. Someone reminded me today that we have five weeks of school left. My first thoughts were whoa, were not ready to start thinking about the end of the year when we have so much to do. Here is a little of what is in store over the next few weeks: AP testing begins next week and continues through the May 13th, EOC testing the following week, prom, senior picnic, baccalaureate, selling of reserved senior parking spots for the 2011-2012, GRADUATION FOR THE CLASS of 2011, Area Special Olympics and regional and state playoffs for baseball, softball, track, golf, tennis and theater, academic competitions will occur over the next couple of weeks. Dragons here, Dragons there, Dragons everywhere.

Soccer Playoff Success

In case you have NOT heard ...... WOW ... both our Girls and Boys Soccer teams came up with big wins last night. Our Girls had a big victory over Flowermound by a score of 2-1. The girls will play Friday night at Dragon Stadium against Colleyville Heritage at 8:00 pm. The Boys won in dramatic fashion over Marcus 5-2.The boys scored three goals in the shootout and completely shut out Marcus in the shootout. The boys will play Friday night at Birdville Stadium at 6:30 pm as they take on Mansfield HS in the the area final.

Spring Activities are in Full Bloom

Our students are in the midst of their academic and extracurricular pursuits. Each day, we hear students say I was accepted to this university or I am wait listed and awaiting the news on my selection. It is an exciting and nerve racking time, especially as students realize that the news to come will impact their futures.

We are also in the planning phase for graduation and making sure our students are staying on top of their graduation requirements and not getting the mysterious disease that seniors get this time of the year .... The Deadly SENIORITIS bug. A senior letter will be going out to all seniors with upcoming dates and reminders of senior spring events next week. Graduation will be Friday, June 3, 2011 at 7:30 pm at Dragon Stadium.

DRAGONS IN ACTION

Band: Solo and Ensemble Auditions have been held and we have137 students that have qualified for the State Solo and Ensemble Contest which will be held on May 28th in Austin.73 solos and 116 ensemble pieces were submitted for adjudication. Additionally we have one string contestant who qualified for State.

Choir: Solo & Ensemble We have 38 students that have qualified for State Solo & Ensemble competition on the choral side.

Future Problem Solvers and Community Problem Solvers have qualified for the State Future Solving Bowl in Austin the weekend of April 18th.

Robotics: Our Senior High Robotics Team once again has won the regional competition and have qualified for the FTCs / World's Robotics Championship which will be held in St Louis on April 27-30.

Our Boys and Girls Soccer Teams have bopth wrapped up their district competions. The Boys Soccer team is currently ranked #2 Nationally and #1 in State and they went undefeated this year. They cruised through district and won the District Championship and have a season record of 21-0-3. Our Girls Soccer team came in second place in district, posting a season record of 20-4-2. Our girls are currently ranked #25 Nationally and #8 in State. The boys first round playoff games will be Tuesday night as the boys take on Marcus at Denton High and the girls first round game will be at Northwest on Tuesday v. Flowermound.

Our Boys Baseball and Girls Softball Teams are both in first place. The boys had a huge victory this past week as they defeated Coppell at their place by a score of 8-0 to take the district lead. The girls were in a three way tie for first place with Denton Guyer and Keller Central. Friday night our girls got down to Guyer by a score of 0-5 when they went crazy at the plate and came back to win 12-7. Great Job Dragons!

Our One Act Play competed this past week as they performed Shakespere's 12th Night amazingly at the zone contest. Unfortunately, they were chosen as the alternate in the zone contest. Our UIL Academic Team placed as the district runner up team this past weekend. We have approximately 24 students advancing to the Regional Academic Competition in Lubbock on April 15-16th. Congratulations to the following teams that won team honors Computer Science Team 1st Place, Journalism Team 1st Place, Social Studies Team 1st Place, Speech and Debate Team 1st Place,1st Place Team in Spelling and Vocabulary, 1st place Team in Literary Criticism. We have approximately 24 students that have qualified to advance to the Regional Academic Meet.

Our Hockey Team competed this past week at the US Hockey National Championship tournament. We lost out in the Championship Game and were the National Runner Up for 2010-2011. FANTASTIC

Carroll Senior High is currently ranked second in state in the running for the State's Gold Cup Award to the school earning the most points for district and post district honors for UIL Academic and Extracurricular Success.

Dual Credit v. AP/PAP

Registration for the 2011-2012 school year has been completed. Students always struggle with what courses should they take in order to be prepared for life beyond high school. As a parent I always tried to encourage both my daughter and son to consider dual credit, mainly because it would save us money. I also believed it would give them a leg up on credits needed to complete their college degree plan.

After watching both of them we learned there were some advantages and disadvantages we had not considered. First, some of the disadvantages not considered were that dual credit courses taken in high school will not be used by their college to calculate their college GPA. Additionally, as a result of taking dual credit courses, the next level college course to be taken has a higher degree of difficulty in rigor.
The advantages of credits earned in high school include going into college a semester ahead of most students and the amount of money saved in tuition and housing by having to attend college longer is reduced. Further, courses taken give the student a taste of what to expect in college.

In conclusion: what is best for each student often varies depending on what their college plans and course of study include. Dual credit courses typically are not on par with AP or PAP courses since they are taught by community colleges and their target audience often times are adult learners or students who chose a community college over a Tier 1 university for various reasons. The preparation a student receives academically by taking a College Board approved AP/PAP course in most cases will better prepare a student to meet the rigors of the college curriculum. The GPA hit has the potential to be a significant disadvantage especially if you are pursuing a degree plan that relies on your GPA for entrance. Ultimately, it becomes what is best for your son or daughter.

I think this is a very important decision because the implications are far reaching. Please consider the AP/PAP curriculum because the rigor and preparation far out weigh the short term concerns over ones high school GPA. If you have questions, please contact your student's counselor. It is not too late to change into a AP or PAP course.

Dragon Success
Each year, we have the pleasure of watching and supporting our students as the participate in various extracurricular and co-curricular activities. We are always so impressed and proud of our kids for representing our school and community in victory and disappointment. We had our spring pep rally yesterday and as I sat there listening as our students and teams were being recognized it reinforced what we all know about our students, coaches and directors .... Success is the result of Heart, Commitment and Great Enthusiasm to give of your BEST. Congratulations to our students, teachers, coaches and directors for leading and succeeding in Great Dragon Fashion. TRADITION NEVER GRADUATES !

Basketball Teams:

Congratulations to our Boys and Girls Basketball teams which both advanced to the playoffs. Coach Youngblood's team lost a heart breaker to Plano West 42-41 in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Morrison's girls advanced to the playoffs and beat Colleyville Heritage in the first round and lost in the Area Playoff game to Duncanville to 46-42. We are so proud of both teams and their coaches for having a wonderful year. These student athletes helped their coaches as they both reached coaching milestones in the number of wins over their careers: Coach Youngblood 400 wins and Coach Morrision 500 wins.

Swimming Team:
How does BEST in State sound! The Carroll Men's Swim team blitzed the competition en-route to being declared State Champions. It was a great team accomplishment as the men out placed their nearest competitor by 74 points. Congratulations to Bryce Klein who was the State Champion Diver. Our Women's Swim team placed second in state by one point even though WE KNOW they were best in State.

Wrestling Team::

Dominic Cruciani, Dillon Swacker and Matt Swoyer had amazing performances this past weekend at the 2011 UIL State Wrestling Tournament in Austin. The Dragon team of three, finished 9th overall in state which is their first top ten finish in school history. Please congratulate these wrestlers who medaled at state: 3rd in State Dominic Cruciani at 215 lbs, 5th Place Dillon Swacker at 152 lbs and Top 8 Matt Swoyer at 145 lb.

Our Debaters our qualifying for Nationals along with our other UIL Academic teams are preparing for their district meet which will be March 25th. If you have not had an opportunity to see our art students impressive projects that will be submitted for the state VASE competition they can be see in our gallery. Also, we are in the middle of soccer, baseball, softball and track seasons. Stay tuned for more Dragon News.

Crazy Weather

Hopefully we have gotten past the crazy weather pattern of ice and snow of the past two weeks. During this time our students and staff have showed their ability to be flexible. Our students have adjusted to missing class and trying to get back into the routine of having class. Over the past three weeks we had 5 students who advanced to State as part of the Texas Music Educators Association selection and recogntion program. Our All State Members include: Bryce Thomas/Band, Taylor White/Band. Brice has been named All State for four consecutive years, amazing accomplishment. Additionally Taylor has been named as a All State Musician in Choir, Jazz and now Band. Holly Rosenberg made first chair piccolo and qualified for All State recognition. All State Choir Members are: JD Montgomery, Paige Stinnnett.

Dragon Swim Team Sweeps the District 6-5A Swim/Dive Meet:
Carroll Girls won the District Championship with 265 points followed by Keller with 101 points, Central 79 points, Coppell 47 points, Northwest 18 points, Guyer 16 points, Saginaw 14 points and finally Fossil Ridge 6 points.
Carroll Boys won the District Championship with 266 points followed by Keller with 84 points, Northwest 18 points, Coppell 56 points, Central 42 points, Fossil Ridge 24 points, Saginaw 8 points, and lastly Guyer with 6 points.

All 5 Divers advanced to Regionals and additionally all 37 swimmers advanced to Regionals in 62 of 64 individual swim races. The Dragons won 23 of 24 events in the meet, including all six relays and set Pool Records in 12 of 16 individual events

Dragon Basketball Teams:

In a crazy week of playing 3-4 games in order to get caught up due to ice and snow our Girls wrapped up their district season with a district championship and will begin the playoff on Monday against Marcus.The girls finished with a 27-6 record and will play Marcus on Monday at Flowermound HS at 8:00pm. Our boys have clinched a playoff spot and as we get more details we will pass it on to all.

We are in the midst of academic competition not to mention our Soccer, baseball and softball teams are kicking off their seasons. Stay tuned for more Dragon News.

End of the First Semester

It is hard to believe the first semester is almost over, but our students are currently taking their semester exams and the semester concludes this Friday, January 14th. As we look back over the first semester we have witnessed our students Protect the Tradition and continue the legacy of success. They have distinguished themselves in academics and extracurricular activities by being recognized as National Merit Scholars, All State Musicians, produced the Best Yearbook in the Nation, placed 2nd at the National Cheerleading competition and have advanced to the playoffs in volleyball, cross country, football, team tennis, and are well on the road in basketball and UIL Academic Competition. We sincerely appreciate the manner in which our community and parents support our Dragons In Action.

Our campus has faced some challenges with campus renovations and construction. We would like to express our appreciation to our students, parents and staff for adjusting to the inconveniences of technology changes, new construction projects and the accompanying parking and traffic changes in a positive fashion.

Remember we will not have school on January 17th in honor of Martin Luther King. Likewise, we will have a teacher workday on Tuesday, January 18th and students will return on Wednesday as we start our second semester.

Being Thankful

The annual gathering of family for turkey, dressing, football and pumpkin pie which traditionally occurs during Thanksgiving week is a week in the past at this point. I always have enjoyed this time of year which causes me to pause and to be so appreciative for all the many blessings that I tend to take for granted.

I have decided to not await the next holiday or to wait on New Years to make new resolutions for the upcoming year. I want to be grateful and to show my appreciation every day for those in my life and for the opportunities that avail themselves to me each day.

Past and Present Carroll Dragons continue to make a difference wherever they are planted and we are proud of each and all of them. From students succeeding in the professional world, collegiate level to our high school students. They are winning and succeeding in all arenas.

Our Boys and Girls Cross Country Team have qualified to attend the Nike National Cross Country Meet in Seattle, Washington. Best of luck to Coach Leonard, Coach Gilley, Coach Wilson and Coach Dews.
Patrick Graham has been invited to the Harvard Debate as one of the top 12 LD Debaters in the country. He is the only Texas debater to be invited. Congratulations to Patrick, Coach Forbes and our entire debate team and program.
Taylor White has been named to the All State Band and has been named All State 3 consecutive years in Choir, Band and Jazz.We cant wait for next year.
Congratulations to Coach Wasson and our entire football program who have advanced to the Region Final Round. Dragon Tradition in Active.
Our band students are currently competing in the All State Band selection process and we have 31 students in the final round.
Choir All State competitors are also in their final round in which we have 3 students up for All State.

Veteran's Day

Thursday, November 11th is celebrated throughout our country as Veteran's Day. President Eisenhower signed into law that the 11th month, 11th day and at the 11th hour our country would set aside a time to honor those who have served and sacrificed for their country. Their fight has been to ensure that the cause of peace might be preserved. It is our hope that you will take time to thank a veteran for the rights that we each enjoy and take for granted daily. Carroll Senior High will have a school wide assembly on Novemeber the 11th from 11:00 - 12:00 to show our appreciation to our local veterans and their families. All are welcome to attend the program.

Second Six Weeks

Our Second Six Weeks of school is underway and our school is in the middle of our Fall Activities. Students are actively beginning their college visits and application process as they prepare for life beyond high school along with organizations and teams competing for district titles and the playoffs. As always we are proud of each and every student and their organization for the manner in which they represent our school and community. Go Dragons !

Dragon Recognitions

Debate team competes almost every weekend and these students consistently are finishing in the top five teams out of 100-150 teams they face as they compete across the state and country.
Volleyball team is sporting a record of 32-5, a district record of 8-1 and are currently in 2nd place. They have a big match up versus district leading Keller Central at home this Friday, October 22nd.
Football team is also is in 2nd place with a 5-2 record and 3-1 district record.
Cross Country team has been lighting up the course with wins by the Girls at the McNeil Invitational, Nike South Meet in the Woodlands was won by our Boys and Girls. This past weekend the Boys came in 1st while the Girls finished 2nd at the Arkansas Chili Pepper Classic. Their district meet will be next week October 28th at 9:00 AM Grapevine at Meadowmere Park.
Swimming team is off to its winning ways in the pool after the Boys and Girls won this past weekends Dragon Hunt Swim Meet. Swimmers were awarded rubber chickens rather than medals or ribbons.
The Mighty Dragon Band competed this last weekend in Lewisville at the District Marching Contest and they will be advancing to the Area Contest this coming weekend at Standridge Stadium the time is TBA. It is projected that we will perform in the morning and the advancing bands will perform that evening.

Upcoming Events

Please remember that tomorrow night our district will be hosting a financial seminar on school funding with Keller ISD, Colleyville ISD entitled The Good, The Bad and The Ugly at 7:00 PM at CSHS Auditorium. We hope you all will plan to come out and be in attendance as we try to learn about how we can promote equitable funding for our students.

October 30th: 10:00 -12:00 Girls and Boys Basketball Kickoff at CSHS gymnasium followed by hamburgers.

November 11th: Veterans Day Assembly in the gym from 10:00-11:00. All veterans and community members are invited to be our guest for our program as we honor our veterans. There will be a luncheon sponsored by our STUCO for our veterans and families.

End of the First Six Weeks

It is hard to believe that the first six weeks is coming to a conclusion this Friday. We look back at the first six weeks and we have faced some unique challenges with the technology upgrades that have and are being installed and finalized. I would like to thank our teachers for their patience and willingness to problem solve as we seek to keep our focus on instruction and serving our students.

A couple reminders of importance:

Carroll Education Foundation Culinary Arts Celebration will be this coming Sunday at he DFW Hyatt. Please come out and support our foundation in a fun filled evening at the DFW Hyatt.

Homecoming activities will begin next week, October 4-9. We will have our Community Pep Rally on Wednesday, October 6 at Dragon Stadium. Our Homecoming Dance will be at the Gaylord on Saturday, October 9th.

THE POWER OF ONE

The theme for our district this year is "The Power of One". We each understand and recognize that we each have been provided an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Through acts of kindness, encouragement and by challenging students with authentic learning experiences we know we can provide them with an educational experience that opens the doors of opportunities which will last a lifetime.

The current year is off to a fast and frenzied start as witnessed by the return of extracurricular activities, curriculum night, juniors buying class rings and our first pep rally tomorrow. As students and staff returned all were greeted with the culmination of significant renovations to our campus. These projects began immediately at the end of the last school year. Last week we had an opportunity to meet and show off some of the new renovations to our parents during our Curriculum Night.

These new changes included a complete refresh of our classroom computers, the network backbone, new promethean boards in most classrooms, updated phone systems, new fire alarm and intercom system, ac upgrades and new ceiling tiles throughout our building. It has been an overwhelming task for all involved and it is in the process of being completed this fall. We are excited about the culmination of these projects and the additional projects that are soon to begin. These projects include a new Art Building, Front Entry, additions to the fieldhouse, gymnasium, swimming pool and locker areas for tennis, soccer and softball and baseball.

On behalf of our staff we would like to thank everyone for all they have done and are doing to help us get the new year started.

Conclusion of the Year

The school year has flown by and we have enjoyed another Great year of success as we have watched our students succeed on the district, state and national levels from academic competition, fine arts competition to athletic success. As we come to the close of the school year we are preparing to conclude the academic year with the administration of final exams, finalizing grades, gathering up textbooks (if you find any please return to CSHS), assisting seniors who will be transitioning to the college. This summer we will be displaced some due to the beginning of bond construction and renovations at the senior high. If we can be of assistance please call on us here at the senior high.

GRADUATION PLANS

Graduation Ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM at Dragon Stadium on June 4, 2010 and yes the stadium will be ready !

Inclement Weather: Should there be inclement weather on Friday, June 4th we will delay the start 1-2 hours. It will be our intention to try to get the ceremony underway no later than 8:30 - 9:00. The closer we get to 9:00 it pushes the end a little later than we want. We will let the weather guide this decision.

The next scheduled time will be Saturday at 11:00 or a 2:00 since project graduation is the night before.

Should we have to delay again we are set to begin the ceremony Sunday at 2:00.

TAKS RESULTS
Our student individual results have been received and we are making those available to parents and or student pick up through their grade level counselor. We will also be sending another copy out with report cards at the end of the year.Our students at the Senior High performed as we expected in spectacular fashion on the state assessment.

Our Aggregate passing percentage are as follows in comparing 2009 to 2010 scores:
ELA / 99%, Math / 99%, Social Studies / 100%, Science / 99%. As a campus we also pay close attention to the commended scores and the number of individual students who failed each tested area.

We saw a dip in the commended percentage in Math 49% from 59% and Science 34% from 45% while seeing a increase in ELA 54% from 53% and SS 84% from 83%.

An area that we are extremely pleased in is with the number of students who failed a portion compared to the previous year. In ELA we had only 4 failures compared to 7 the previous year, Math we had 8 failures compared to 23 the previous year, SS had 0 failures compared to 0 the previous year, and lastly Science had only 5 failures compared to 15 the previous year.

Congratulations to the following student groups, teams, their directors and coaches for the success of their organizations and teams.

Our Boys Golf Team are Regional Golf Champions and will be advancing to state. Our Girls Golf Team is competing in the Regional Golf Tournament in Lubbock this week and we will know their results by the end of the week. Congratulations once again for a job well done to Coach Glenn and Coach Alexander.

Congratulations to our Tennis Team and Coach Smith that qualified several players to Regional tennis also in Lubbock.

Our Dragon Band and Directors Behrends, Johnston, Lown and Bach won Sweepstakes at the District UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest last week in Flowermound as they received ratings of all 1's on stage and in sightreading.

Our Choir and Cantores Choir under the direction of Chris Hutchison and Patty Dees also won sweepstakes and division 1's at their District UIL contest on April 1st.

Congratulations go out to our Robotics Team coached by Linda Woessner who competed in the Worlds Robotics contest in Atlanta last week.

If you have not heard our Hockey Team won the Texas Cup Title and competed last week in the USA Hockey National Championship Tournament in Bensenville, Illinois.

Our Girls Soccer team and Coach Colvin went two rounds deep in the soccer playoffs before bowing out to McKinney Boyd.

Congratulations to Coach Oglesby and the Boys Soccer Team who advanced to the Regional Semifinals in Midland only to be defeated in a overtime thriller by El Paso Belaire 6-5.

Our Amazing Student Council, sponsored by Lora Beneditti were in charge of hosting the State Student Council Convention in Arlingtion which was attended by over 4,500 students. I was so proud of the job our students for wowing and presenting a first class experience for student councils from across our state.

Our Speech and Debaters competed this past weekend in NFL Debate and qualified 8 students to Nationals which will be held in St. Louis, Missouri in June. Congratulations to these students and Coach Forbes.

Our Community Problem Solving Team advanced to the State Bowl this past weekend for their community service project entitled "Be Me". Congratulations to our Teen Leadership, PALS and GT students who comprised this team. Great job Coach Gilley and Laura Wood-Smith.

Congratulations to Coach Holmes and our Boys Track Team that placed 2nd at the District track Meet. They will be advancing 11 athletes in 10 events to the Regional Meet in Lubbock on May 3-4.

Our Girls Track Team coached by Miranda Wilson finished in 3rd place at the District Track Meet last week at Coppell and were 3 points out of second. They qualified 10 girls to the Regional Track Meet in Lubbock.

Our UIL Academic Team will be leaving to compete at the Regional Academic Meet in Lubbock this weekend. We will get you details on their success. Our OAP performed The Elephant Man at the District OAP and were truly the best. Stacie and Roald Martinsen put together a awesome and impressive cast and crew. They have five advancing students who were selected to compete at this years UIL State Meet in Theatrical Design.

A Senior Parents Letter we will be sent out the first of May listing important dates, testing schedules, dress code expectations for graduation and dates of mandatory class meeting and other graduation reminders. Pay close attention to the senior final exam schedule which will begin on Wednesday, May 26th and conclude on Tuesday, June 1st. Testing a few days earlier will allow senior grades and transcripts to be finalized by Wednesday, June 2nd. There will be senior meetings scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM. Seniors if you have any outstanding obligations, debts or lost textbooks please take care of these items now so you will be cleared to participate in Graduation Exercises.

Finals & Exemptions: Senior who are exempt do not have to attend classes they are exempt in. Further, if a senior is planning on using their allowable absences around finals they will be able to do so during May 27th through June 1st (Make sure you do not exceed your allowable number of absences). Textbook Audit: Our district and campus will be conducting a textbook audit at the end of the school year in order to reconcile our textbook inventories. Carroll Sr High Robotics Team competed this past weekend at the FIRST Tech Regional Challenge in San Antonio. Out team qualified to compete at the World Championship in Atlanta April 14-17.
Carroll Forensic Team was named as the #1 program in the DFW Area with 11 students named All State. Individual winners included Dillon Huff/State Champion in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking, Megan Schippmann/ 2nd in Congressional Debate.
Boys Soccer Team Bi-District Champs with their 3-0 victory over Euless Trinity this past week.
Girls Soccer Team Bi-District Champs with their 1-0 victory over Fossil Ridge.
Best of luck to our Dragon Hockey team for posting a record of 21-4-2. They advance to compete in the eight team high school hockey tournament, known as the Texas Cup. The Dragons will begin the tournament this Friday at the Dr. Pepper Star Center in Farmers Branch.

Making our Mark In Texas

Parents we were extremely proud of your kids for the manner in which they came to school and were focused and ready to test today. TAKS testing requires that we abbreviate our normal class schedule to allow all students to have adequate time to complete their test. Our students were on time, focused, gave great effort and were considerate of their classmates. While testing was occurring our seniors met at 12:00 PM in the auditorium for a class meeting as we discussed spring activities and covered several items such as senioritis do's and don'ts.

Making our Mark in Austin:
This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Austin to watch our wrestlers and swimmers who were competing in their State Championships. Austin was the place to be this past weekend for Dragon Fans because not only were our swimmers and wrestlers there but so were our golfers and our baseball teams. In case you have not heard OUR DRAGONS made their mark in Austin this past weekend:

Wrestlers: Congratulation to our team of four young men who placed 13th in the State. Kody Weaver placed 3rd in State in the heavy weight division and Dominic Cruciani placed 6th in State.
Swimmers: Congratulations to our boys team that placed 2nd in State and our girls who placed 3rd in State. I don't have time to elaborate on the disputed disqualification of our girls relay team that cost our girls the state title. They handled the decision with class and grace even though disappointed. They were great role models for the rest of us. We cant forget our Freshman diver who finished 3rd in state, congratulations Bryce Klein.
State VASE or Visual Art Scholastic Event was held this past weekend and Victoria Orr qualified two pieces of her artwork for the State VASE Contest. Awesome!
Our Robotics Team competed this past weekend and finished as finalist in the Southwest Regional FTC Robotics Competition.
The Dallas Morning News selected two students this week for their Summer Internship, Congratulations to CSH junior Sean Meehan.

Last night it was my pleasure to watch our team as they played Jesuit along with a number of our students, the drumline, and parents as they won by a score of 4-3. They will begin the playoffs soon, so make plans on coming out to support our Dragons.

Our Guidance department has worked diligently to provide information to students and parents on how to plan for college. Their fall college fair was a huge success as evident by the turnout out of students, parents and universities that were present.

Tomorrow, February 25th our Guidance Department will be hosting a College Workshop. The place to be is Carroll Senior High SAC from 5:30-6:30. A presentation will be made on "How to Pay for College". This will be followed by numerous breakout sessions from 6:30-8:30 with universities and colleges as the discuss the programs offered at their institutions.

Our Staff will be wearing their favorite college shirts tomorrow to show their college allegiances. Come check us out !

TAKS English Language Arts (ELA)

The Exit Level TAKS Test will be administered on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. We know that our students are well prepared to be successful on the state assessment which is one of the required graduation pieces for Texas students. Due to test security and to limiting test interruptions NO students will be dismissed on Wednesday prior to the 1:04 dismissal bell for lunch. Please make arrangements to coordinate other appointments accordingly since we will not disrupt the testing rooms.

All senior students not testing are to attend a mandatory Senior Meeting to be held in the auditorium from 12:00-1:00 on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Students are to enter the building from the West Auditorium Entrance.

Heart of a Dragon

Amid the busyness of life sometimes circumstances in the lives of our co-workers and our students grab our hearts as we watch them endure the challenges and pains of life. Today I had the honor to attend the celebration of the life of one our our student's mother. She battled cancer for over four years. As I sat there listening to the words of how she touched so many children, how she had a heart for family and recalled that she called us two weeks ago concerned about her daughter it made me think of what will be our lasting legacy.

Our district is committed to spreading and promoting the message of Rachel's Challenge. It is my hope that we model a genuine compassion for ALL our students, our co-workers and the parents of our students. Today I was reminded that in our darkest moments of despair and loss we can count on faith, our family and our friends to guide and support us as we experience disappointment and loss. Your kindness, unselfish gestures whether in word or deed DO make a difference. We may never know the power of our words and kindness ...... but their impact will last a lifetime.

Take time to live, to play and to express your love and appreciation to those around you.

Harvard Speech and Debate Tournament

This past weekend our debate and extemporaneous speakers traveled to Boston to compete in the Harvard Speech and Debate Tournament. I had the privilege to accompany our team and was completely impressed with the way our students represented our school and community. Our school placed 9th out of 4oo schools. Congratulations to ALL our students and Coach Diane Forbes. Good Luck at State which is in El Paso February 26th.

State Bound

We have four wrestlers who qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament which begins on the February 25th in Austin. Congratulations to Coach Hathaway and Coach Dirker and our awesome wrestlers.

Swim Success

Can you believe this ...... our Boys and Girls Swimmers were not only District Champions but they both are also the Regional Swim Champions. Both teams are seeded 2nd going into the State Swim Meet set for February 26th at the UT Swim Center. We qualified 17 swimmers and 1 diver to the state meet. Hope to see you in Austin as we support our swimmers as they out dive, out kick and out touch the competition.

Pep Rally

Today we had our spring pep rally recognizing our spring sports and our basketball teams. We were entertained by our band, cheerleaders, drill team, the crew, green men and our wolkies and our screeching eagle, aka Woody. The kids are creative and seem to appreciate the efforts of their classmates.

Lady Dragons

Our Lady Dragon Basketball team will be playing Cedar Hill in their third round playoff game on Friday at 7:00 PM in Grand Prairie for the Area Championship. They are a great group of young ladies that have had a great year. See you there as we Protect the Tradition together!

Thursday, I was amazed with the amount of snow we received. There is something about snow days that brings out the kid in all of us and we saw that in our kids. We had several activities scheduled that have either been postponed or will be rescheduled from a pep rally, Fort Worth Symphony performances to various other extracurricular activities. As further details for these events become available we will post them either on the district or campus websites.

Remember that Monday will be a staff development day and there will be no school. On Tuesday when students return to class it will be a A Day as we seek to get back onto our A-B Day rotation.

Swimmers Dominate District Meet

Congratulations to Coach Murphy, his staff, swimmers, divers and all the parents who supported the Dragons this past weekend at the District Swim Meet in Mansfield. The Dragons dominated the pool, the podium and the field by scoring over 228 points in both the girls and boys team events. We will be advancing approximately 37 swimmers and divers to the Regional swim meet on February 12-13 in Mansfield. Come out and support our swimmers and of course the one we KNOW is our Swim Coach of the Year.

Do You Make an Difference?

This past week we had the Cross Country and the football banquets. I was moved by students who recounted their experiences of how their lives have been forever changed by being a part of a team and by being touched by a coach as they described the memories they will carry for a lifetime. The power of our words and acts of kindness provide Hope, Encouragement and propel others into being Significant rather than simply being successful. Take the time to thank those who have touched your life and take the time to repay them by paying it forward!

February is Black History month. As a school we believe it is vital to Celebrate Diversity in order to foster appreciation, respect and a sense of unity as Americans. Our campus will have a variety of activities during the month to focus on many of the contributions of African Americans to our American History.

Pink Zone: Our Lady Dragons basketball team will be sponsoring the Pink Zone Game on 2-9-10 against Flowermound to bring awareness to Cancer research and to support those who have and are being impacted by cancer.

We originally had our College Workshop scheduled for February 11, 2010, but due to a scheduling conflict we have rescheduled our workshop for February 25th at CSHS. We will begin with a Financing College presentation from 5:30-6:30 to be followed with break out sessions with individual college representatives from 6:30-8:30.

On February 11th please come out and enjoy the great music of the Fort Worth Symphony at the CSHS Auditorium. The FWSO which will perform during the day for our students and return to offer a community performance at 6:30 PM.

Congratulations go out to the Carroll Senior High Staff. The National Center for Educational Achievement recognized CSHS as part of their 2009 Just for Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas. Carroll Senior High is in the top 5% of schools in the state based upon the percentage of students scoring at or above the NCEA's College and Career Readiness Targets in the areas of Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies.

Dillon Huff won the prestigious Montgomery Bell Academy Round Robin Debate Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee.

Taylor Schneider was recently named to the 2009 Adidas NSCAA All American Youth Soccer Team and will be recognized in Boston this month. She has verbally committed to Notre Dame.

All State Choir: Sabrina Romero and Cassie Pelton were recently named to the All-State Choir.

All State Band: Ashley Wang/Flute, Michael Keane/Bassoon (2nd year All State), Brice Thomas/Tuba (3rd year All State), Seth Shaffer/Tuba and Taylor White/Trumpet (1st year as Choir and 2nd year trumpet All State).

Yearbook Staff: 2009 Yearbook was awarded a First Place with Special Merit. Scored 4th highest out of 400 yearbooks.

All State Jazz Band: Braden Walter 1st Chair Alto-Sax

Hannah Brown was one of the five finalist for the Davey O'Brien High School Scholarship Award.

Our Counselors will be making classroom presentations during the week of January 25th. The tentative date for students to begin their at home registration through Family Access Online Registration will be February 1st. Our annual Parent Meeting to discuss scheduling will be on February 4th at 6:00 in the Student Activity Center at CSHS.

College Workshop

Our counseling staff will be hosting a college workshop on how to pay for college and will also have break out sessions with college representatives on February 11 from 5:30-8:00 at CSHS.

The school year seems to be passing us by and it is unbelievable to imagine it is the year 2010. During this school year I have felt that having a blog has facilitated our attempts to promote open communication with students, parents and our community. In the year to come we look forward to doing a better job of using technology and all it brings to help us keep you informed on upcoming events and student accolades.

As we begin the new year it is always good to look back and evaluate the past year as we make plans for the upcoming year. First, I am truly proud to be a part of such a great school district and faculty. One of the things that continues to impress me which I believe sets us apart from other districts is our district's Core Values which declares what we believe and what are guiding principles for decisionmaking will be based upon.

We know that your CHILDREN are OUR lasting legacy and by working together we believe we can help each student excel. Our Southlake Carroll Dragons continue to experience great success both while in our schools and as they leave our community. I am reminded of that fact as we see our current students being admitted to schools the likes of Yale, Harvard, Air Force and Naval Academies to Guildhall School of Music and Art. Likewise, we see their success as they earn their Eagle Scout Award for projects such as United Through Reading to watching our past athletes excel at the collegiate and professional levels.

Congratulations to our current and past students for their commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, to athletics but more importantly for being individuals of character who are giving back and making a difference in our community and world.

Holiday Break

On behalf of our staff I would like to express our appreciation and pride to each of our students and parents. We have enjoyed an amazing fall semester as we have watched our students as they represented our school and community in all their various activities.

Most recently our fine arts department performed the musical White Christmas. Unbelievable talent, performances and leadership by all who were involved resulted in the best student play I have ever watched. Super Job ! Please take the opportunity to express your appreciation to all who played a part in making this a huge success.

As we begin our break our students are in the middle of athletic seasons in basketball, wrestling, and swimming. Soccer, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and lacrosse will be around the corner not to mention our ACADEMIC TEAM Competitions. If you are not involved it is not too late. I always hope I have not forgotten any group.

Some academic reminders:

Semester Finals and the end of the first semester will be the week of Jan. 11th
Our Board voted to change how we report class rank which will provide more opportunities for all our students to be considered more holistically as the apply to college.
Spring registration will be around the corner and we will begin the process in March. Look for some new courses to be added.

Lastly, please enjoy the Holiday Break as you celebrate and take time to appreciate your family and the blessings we each enjoy. See you in 2010 !

Friday, September 20th from 12:25 - 1:00 we will be having a pep rally in the senior high gym. Come out and show your support for ALL our Dragons. The Dragons will play Allen HS on Saturday at 8:00 PM at Cowboy Stadium.

It has been another awesome week of student success.

Veterans Day Assembly:

This past Wednesday our Student Council organized a wonderful Veterans Day Assembly. It featured the Pledge of Allegiance led by our life skills class, musical selections by our choir and jazz band, presentation of colors by our own Eagle Scouts and a Skype video conference with a soldier in Iraq. Phil Barber, Dragon Council member,was our guest speaker who spoke to our students about the importance of serving our country in order to preserve the rights and freedoms we enjoy. He recognized many local veterans and former Southlake students that have and are serving in the Armed Forces. Congratulations to our STUCO and Mrs. Beneditti for organizing a great tribute. I was very proud of our Carroll Senior High students for being so respectful and appreciative of our guest.

The 11 month, the 11th day and the 11th hour was set aside as a day to remember those who served and sacrificed in order that we might enjoy the freedoms we possess as Americans.

We would like to invite you to be our guest for Veterans Day at the Senior High on November the 11th. Our program is being led by our student council and will feature our band, choir, guest speakers and a recognition by our students of our local veterans. Our program will begin at 10:00 AM in the gym and will conclude at 11:00 AM and will be followed with a luncheon for veterans and their immediate family. Veterans and family members it is our hope that you will make special plans to be in attendance so we might honor you on this special day for something we enjoy every day.

The adage that Success breeds Success describes the Carroll Dragons.
Congratulations go out to Ron Behrends and his staff for preparing our students in Band to earn a Division 1 at the most recent UIL Band Marching Contest. The Mighty Dragon Band has earned a Division 1 thirty out of the last thirty one years! We also had one student who was named to the All Region Orchestra, congratulations to Bonnie Song a wonderful violinist. We are awaiting the announcement of the All State Orchestra and Jazz groups.

Our Choir under the leadership of Chris Hutchison had twenty six students compete in the Texas Music Educators Association All State Choir tryouts. Twenty two of these students made the All Region Choir and fourteen of these students willing be advancing to the Area Tryouts.

If you have not heard our Cross Country teams led by Coach Leonard has twleve athletes advancing to regionals. Our Girls Cross Country team came in first place at the District Meet this past week and two boys will be advancing to Regionals after they finished third and tenth.

How about the Lady Dragon Volleyball Team! They finished second in district and defeated Central High School in the Bi-District Playoff game before a packed gym over at Timbercreek High School this evening in three games. Congratulations to Coach Stanfield, his staff and our player. What a Crowd!

Our football team as you know has one game left in district play this coming Friday at Lewisville. Sporting an undefeated recorded in district and 8-1 overall record Coach Watson and his staff and players are taking one game at a time in pursuit of a District Championship. The first round of playoffs will be finalized in the next day or so, so be listening for the date, time and the PLACE!

Success breeds Success is our tradition of excellence in all we do. I always hate to recognize groups out of fear of forgetting or overlooking another. We have student groups that are traveling all over the country and state to places like Harvard and Georgetown to debate, compete in computer science and academic competitions. They are achieving great success so stay connected to learn of their district, regional, state and national TFA and UIL results.

Student success would not occur without strong support systems which include awesome coaches, sponsors, parents and booster clubs. On behalf of our students and staff we would like to thank you for your support. personally seeing the twinkle of pride in the eye of students, parents and coaches makes it worth all the long hours of sacrifice.

Flower Mound Football Update

Parents we have received several inquiries this week regarding Flower Mound HS conducting a fundraising activity at this Friday's game in which they were going to only be charging our fans to park at the game. I was notified today that they have canceled their fundraiser all together due to a variety of reasons. Please forward this information on to the rest of our Dragons.

UIL Reclassification

UIL Reclassification
This past week was another fast paced, activity filled week. The high school and the senior high submitted our combined enrollment figure of 2,513 students to the UIL. Every two years the University Interscholastic League requires schools to submit their enrollment of students in grades 9-12 in preparation for their biennial realigning of the UIL districts. Our enrollment keeps us well above the 2085 student threshhold that seperates 4A and 5A classifications. On February 1, 2010 the UIL will release the new district alignments for the next two school years.

Dragon Success
The dragons continued their success this past week as the Dragon football team defeated the Marcus Maruaders 41-30 bringing their district record to 6-1. The Mighty Dragon band competed in the UIL District Marching Contest this past week and earned straight one's. Their drum major commented "it was their best performance of the year". Our fall team tennis team is in second place and will be preparing for the Regional Tennis Tournament. Our playoff bound lady dragons volleyball team had a 5 set nail biter match on Friday before falling to Marcus.

TAKS Retest:
This week our seniors who are lacking a portion of the TAKS Exit test will have an opportunity to retest in order to meet the state graduation requirement. The schedule is as follows ELA/Tue, Math/Wed, Sci/Thur and Soc. Stud/Fri (October 20-23).

Amazing as it may sound the first six weeks of the school year is officially over and report cards and grades will be posted this coming Thursday, October 8th. We have watched our students experience success in athletics from football, volleyball, tennis, cross country to golf, debate and choir. Future opportunities for success await our students. Parents, we appreciate your support of our students and the programs they participate in.

Some upcoming events and information of importance include:

Homecoming Activities will be going on this week in preparation for Fridays game v. Coppell. Our Homecoming Pep Rally will be at the stadium along with the fall carnival which begins at 6:00 and will be followed by the Pep Rally at 8:00 PM.
PSAT: October 14th all 10th grade students will take the PSAT and we strongly encourage all 11th graders to take the Preparation SAT (PSAT). Junior student scores on the PSAT determine if they will qualify for National Merit Scholarship Program.
We have been notified by the Texas Higher Education Board that there will be some changes to the Top 10% Entrance Admissions Policy. In short all Texas Public Schools will be required to accept the Top 10% of graduating students with UT Austin being the only school that will place a limitation on their entering Freshman class in 2011 to 75% of their incoming freshman. We will make available a copy of the correspondence we received.
The Senior High has monthly Campus Decision making Committee (CDC) meetings. This committee solicits input from teachers, parents, community members and students. The purpose of these meetings is to gather input on we might improve our overall instructional program.

Sick Students: There continue to be some concerns about students battling the flu. Please rest assured that our staff will work with students to get missed work and to schedule test in a reasonable fashion. We definitely do not want students to attend school if they are sick. Students who exceed the number of allowable absences when calculating exemptions will have an opportunity to request a waiver of absences for medically documented H1N1 cases. Should you have any questions a student can either see our school nurse, assistant principal or submit a medical statement to support their reason for their absence.
October 5th & 6th: CSHS Junior Fall Guidance Seminars will be conducted. On October 15th & 16th our counselors will meet with Senior Students as part of our Senior Fall Guidance Seminars. These meeting are conducted annually to assist students in planning, guiding and advising students re: testing requirements, college entrance criteria, timelines, financial aid and scholarship information.

It is hard to believe we are in the fourth week of the first six weeks of school. Our students have plunged into the normal demands of studying, testing to being involved in activities from forensics tournaments to cross country, volleyball, swimming, golf to football competitions. Our kids are awesome in how they represent our school and community in a proud fashion.

Announcements

Thursday, Sept. 24th is National Gordie Day. A day remembered after a college student died from alcohol poisoning. Information will be available during lunch on alcohol poisoning, intoxication risk factors, signs and suggestions of what should I do.

Next Friday, Sept. 25th our Juniors will have a class meeting to receive information on ordering Senior Rings. Be on the look out for the ordering details and deadlines as junior bring home their packets.

Carroll Dragon students and fans are AMAZING. I was impressed with the crowd that attended our season opener at SMU last weekend as we played Plano West in the Tom Landry Classic. Anyone who did not find themselves on their feet multiple times throughout the game because of the touchdowns, the hits to the 300 plus member mighty band, The CREW to the amazing drill team to our cheerleaders who kept us in the game and rooting the Dragons on obviously was not at the game. Just remember this Friday same game, different place (UTA) and different time (7:30). Come Green and to be loud and proud.

Please remember to come out and support our kids as they represent our school and community in all activities. Our volleyball team is 23-5 after winning the Arlington Invitational Tournament this past weekend and our tennis team is off to a good start also.

We have had a great second week of school. Parents a school letter was sent out today regarding some health related information should we be confronted with H1N1 related issues along with a welcome back to school letter. We have received several calls about how we will handle student absences that are flu related when determining exemptions. Our exemption policy is being reviewed and as information becomes available we will pass it on to our students and parents. First and foremost is the safety and well being of our students and staff.

We were notified yesterday of President Obama's live speech to school children next Tuesday on education and there have been some questions raised about how districts are handling this airing. We will not be showing the speech live and believe this a parent option to show and discuss the speech in a taped format with their child in their own homes. We will continue with the scheduled planned curriculum.

On Wednesday, September 9th we will be having our Curriculum Night and we hope you can come out and meet our teachers from 6-7:30.

First Day of School

We had a great first day of school. I was very impressed with our kids and staff and the way they represent our school. We had 1220 students present on the first day of school with there being 645 Seniors and 575 Juniors. We made a few announcements and reminders to our students which included:

Tickets are on sale in the main office from 9-2:30 for the Tom Landry Kickoff football game. We will be playing Plano West at SMU on Saturday 8/29 at 4:30 PM.
Due to having new carpet in the building students are being required to keep food and soft drinks off of the carpeted areas.
Our Volleyball team plays Justin Northwest tonight and will turn around and play them here on Friday night.
Reserved Senior parking places will be sold on Thursday and Friday 8/27-8/28 in the SAC.
Our Senior High Curriculum Night is scheduled for Sept. 9th from 6-7:30. It is our hope that you will come out and meet our staff as they go over their course expectations.

Friday, August 21st from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM students may pick up their preliminary schedules, purchase parking passes (senior students must have a parking permit before they will be sold a reserved parking spot), also lockers are available for assignment, and students will receive club information. Any student who has not picked up their yearbook may also do so at this time.

First Day Packets will be distributed to our students on the first day of school August 24th. Parents there is important information and forms that must be returned to the school. These required forms and information will include student registration, enrollment forms, emergency cards, health information, Acceptable Use Policy, receipt of parent & student handbook forms, FERPA, Migrant Forms, Parental Email Information, Attendance Policy, PTSO Volunteer Opportunities & PSAT registration.

Through the years I have always heard the words Duty, Honor and Service associated with those who served our country. These words summarize the feelings of those who have served our country. Too often times we fail to express our appreciation to those who sacrifice of themselves in order that we might enjoy the freedoms we take for granted. Almost every day a plane lands at DFW bringing home soldiers who are returning from places like Iraq and Afghanistan. I had the privilege of being a part of a crowd of 200 plus this morning at 8:00 AM that welcomed home over 160 young men and women. Patriotic music, clapping, flags being waved and words expressed to our soldiers from thank you to welcome home could be heard. Seeing fathers holding their spouses and young children some for the first time, brought tears. I was moved by the sights and the comments made by returning soldiers such as "I never expected this, I love this place". As we start making plans for the upcoming year we recognize the importance of partnering with parents to ensure student success. Successful students more often than not have a support system that provide guidance, encouragement and needed monitoring.

At Carroll Senior High School we also rely heavily on parent volunteers. Our librarian Sarah Chase is in need of parent volunteers to work in our library. If you would be willing to volunteer 2-3 hours once a week we would ask that you contact Sarah at 949-5822. As the new principal of Carroll Senior High I am getting acquainted with our staff as they start coming by in preparation for the new school year. The students, staff and parents that I have met thus far have been very welcoming.

It is hard to believe that school is around the corner but the good news is you still have three weeks to enjoy the last remnants of summer. With the start of school fastly approaching you may have questions about what to expect. Having served as a principal for the past 19 years let me assure you that I am looking forward to being a part of the Southlake Family where we will protect and extend our tradition of success.

Will there be some changes, the answer is probably yes ..... but just minor ones. Some of the things I believe very strongly in include that our staff and students should be proud of their school, community and the families they represent. The climate of our school is something we all create and is the result of the expectations we set for ourselves. Southlake has a reputation for excellence in all things and a sense of pride in who we are which others are envious of.
